So, let’s answer the question of What Is A Pneumatic Torque Wrench?

The Basics of A Pneumatic Torque Wrench?

We touched on this in a previous blog post, The Ultimate Guide On How Torque Tools Work, but as a refresher, we will quickly cover this again.

Pneumatic is defined as: Containing or operating by air or gas under pressure.

Pneumatic Torque Wrenches, also known as Nutrunners use very high powered and high speed air motors connected to a high ratio planetary gear box to deliver torque in a tool that continuously rotates without the noise or vibration of Impact Wrenches. They work in concert with a Filter/Regulator/Lubricator (FRL) assembly that will adjust the amount of air pressure the tool receives.

The great thing about a pneumatic wrench is the continuous gearing, which minimizes noise substantially, as well, you do not have to deal with the constant hammering like its regular impact wrench counterpart.

Nutrunners will generally work in an air pressure range of about 20-90 PSI.  As with a Hydraulic Torque Wrench, the amount of pressure used will determine the output of the tool.

The force of an air motor may only be 15-30 Lbf/ft but spins at 1000’s of RPM.  When running through the gear box the speed is reduced but the power is multiplied, resulting in outputs of 100’s of foot pounds to tens of thousands of foot pounds and the output will be as low as a fraction of an RPM to dozens of RPM.

Factors To Consider When Choosing A New Pneumatic Torque Wrench!

When purchasing a new Pneumatic Torque Wrench, there are 2 major factors that need to be considered before adding this tool to your toolbox.

  1. The Quality & Accuracy of the tool itself.
  2. Do you want a Shut-Off Nutrunner or a Stall-Torque Nutrunner?

Let’s first answer number one right off the bat!

By purchasing your Pneumatic Torque Tool from CanTorque you will be receiving both a quality & accurate tool, as well as, above and beyond customer care & service.

Now let’s dive into the differences & applications of a Shut-Off Nutrunner vs Stall-Torque Nutrunner.

What is a Shut-Off Nutrunner:

A shut-off nutrunner shuts itself off once the set torque is reached. It allows for the same accurate bolting regardless of the operator or their level of experience – this style of torque wrench is ideal in high-frequency situations.

What is a Stall-Torque Nutrunner:

The torque delivered from a Stall-Torque Nutrunner varies depending on the air pressure. So, you’ll have to set up the correct air pressure in order to apply the corresponding torque – this style of torque wrench works best in high-performance operations.

Whichever one you choose, for your specific application, it will be an invaluable addition to your toolbox and workflow! An air impact wrench will definitely make your work easier by providing repeatability in applications that require fast, accurate bolting.

There you have it, we have answered the question of What Is A Pneumatic Torque Wrench and we hope you learned some valuable information to take your trade to the next level!

Bonus: How To Care For Your New Pneumatic Torque Wrench!

Lubrication is an important aspect of air tool maintenance.

Please see below for our recommendations for most impact tools.

*Make sure to always verify lubricants and quantities with the Product Information Manual for your tool.

Air motor lubrication:
You can either run an inline lubricator, or manually lubricate the tool through the air inlet.

  • 10-15 drops of oil in the air inlet, followed by a few-second run of the tool will distribute the oil through the motor.
  • If the tool is being used for extended periods of time without a lubricator, oil should be re-applied after every few hours of use.
  • This should be done before each use to lubricate the motor, and before storage to prevent corrosion.

Impact Mechanism lubrication:
This can be performed two different ways

  • Through the flush-mount grease fitting using the grease gun included in our Air Care Kits.
  • By removing the hammer case and greasing manually.
  • It is recommended that mechanism lubrication be performed after every 48 hours of actual tool run-time.

*Always check the Product Information Manual to verify grease type and amount for a specific tool.
